Post MPPS PAC scores MAJOR victory in Texas
on: June 8, 2012, 17:36

On March 6, our Political Action Committee made the maximum donation of $5,000 to the campaign of Beto O’Rourke, an underdog who was challenging a horrible opponent -- an eight-term congressman by the name of Silvestre Reyes -- in the Democratic primary for the congressional seat that represents El Paso, Texas.

The underdog candidate won, thanks to the contributions you’ve made to MPP’s PAC.

The incumbent voted for small-minded prohibitionist policies over the last 16 years in the U.S. House, including voting against medical marijuana six times on the House floor.

On the other hand, O’Rourke, who co-authored a book arguing for an end to marijuana prohibition, was publicly good on our issue, even in the face of ads attacking his position.

Reyes was backed by thousands of dollars in corporate donations and the endorsements of Presidents Obama and Clinton. Against these odds, O’Rourke was fighting an uphill battle.

But when the election results came in, O’Rourke actually eclipsed the 50% threshold to prevent a runoff election, defeating the incumbent by 6%!

This means that our $5,000 donation -- plus our regular email alerts to our El Paso supporters -- could very well have prevented the runoff election, which would have been ugly and cost even more money.

Because of federal election law, MPP can only ask people who have donated to MPP and/or our PAC in the past 365 days to donate to our PAC today.
