WESTERVILLE, Ohio --A Westerville woman is getting ready to host an event that will become the first of its kind in the U.S. The Death Cafe started in Europe, and is now making its way to Central Ohio.NBC4's Robyn Haines explains what it is and how it works. The Death Cafe is all about death awareness and making it easy to have a tough conversation with your loved ones.Writer Lizzy Miles faces death head on every day. She's a volunteer for hospice, lost many of her family members before she was even a teenager and her mother died in 2004.But now, she wants others to talk about death to get out of their comfort zones and tackle the inevitable.“We are less accepting of death over the past 100 years,” says Miles. “And that made me think, well how can we help people be more accepting of death? And I think part of it is death awareness and talking about it."So on July 19, she's hosting the country's first ever Death Cafe. It's a safe place for people to meet and talk about their fears, concerns, and opinions.Kim Ogle is already signed up."It's the one thing that we're all guaranteed is going to happen to us. 100 percent of us are going to die someday and the better we can be prepared for that to happen and not just for ourselves, but for our loved ones - having our loved ones know what our wishes are when we die is so helpful."But don't think the Cafe is all about “the end.” Lizzy and Kim both want this event to bring clarity, so people can enjoy “the now."Miles says, “It's talking about death, but it's really bringing you back to life and grasping at, this is what's important to me.”"It's not about the actual dying,” adds Ogle, “it's about helping each other and enjoying each and every day.”
