Post Summer Olympics!

Yay! It's summer olympic time! Will anyone else here be watching? Do you have favorite events to see or any particular athletes to cheer for or strong opinions about the whole affair? Please, share 'em in this thread. You're welcome to! I don't want to be the only one talking! =D

As for me... Seriously, I try to cheer everyone. Most of the athletes may not be household names - outside of the duration of these events - but they work hard and put up with a lot to get here. Also - kinda feel that cheering for everyone is more or less what the olympics is truly about, isn't it? Come together, people of the world, get to know each other and show us your best - that's the olympic spirit, right? Cultures will always have their differences and expensive competitions will probably always have a few scandals - some of which are bound to be more exaggerated by the media than others - but at the root of this gathering lies the concepts of friendliness and honor and learning. I hope that isn't lost.

Haven't checked the full schedule yet, so don't know which events I'll be able to catch... Doubt that television coverage will be able to compete with the internet, in this case. Hope to see the wrestling - of course - among many other events. Have been reading about the early archery tournament, apparently some sweet legally blind young man has already set a new world record in archery. Gotta watch that.

Enough from me for now. Oh but hey, one last note - London rocks! =D

I'm going to try and watch some of the games. I'm really into Track and Field events and I might try to catch some swimming events. I really would like to see the Tae Kwon Do. My wife's parents and her sister practice the art so it would be cool to watch. Also some Judo.

Even some Table Tennis would be cool.

The television coverage is a bit disappointing this year - in my opinion. They only seem to be interested in following and talking about Team USA and they are only really showing the sports that they think will get ratings. Still... If you're into swimming, beach volleyball and gymnastics, it's worth checking out.

Growing up, I remember them really showing all the teams in an event. Which seemed like a slightly more positive and respectful approach. Appreciate that with so many events going at once that's hard to do but... Yea, am just kinda disappointed.

Thankfully, there's the internet. So... Especially for those without cable... You can follow the Olympics and check out the schedules arranged by sport here: http://www.nbcolympics.com/sports/index.html

Reap - That link may be your best bet for watching replays of the various martial art competitions. Judo has already started but apparently Tae Kwon Do doesn't begin until August 8th. Much respect to your relatives for practing, too - that takes some discipline! May I ask how many years they've got under their belts? Should we be looking for any of their sensei in these competitions?

Yeah, totally missed the Judo. The link I have on my phone, but thanks for thinking of me.

As for the family, I think they have been practicing the craft for about a year now. They just recieved their blue with red stripe belt. But their sensei isn't competing. Though he is a 5th degree black belt, I think.

Wow... Blue? That's like... only two steps down from black belt, isn't it? They got that far in only a year? Huh. Impressive. Kudos to them! Hrm. I've heard of the stripes in belts but am not entirely sure how that effects the rank overall. Interesting.

Always ask because I kinda half expect to see someones sensei at the tournaments eventually. These Olympic stars are just so highly ranked, though. It's a bit intimidating - and amazing - to know that even a 5th degree black belt might not be enough to cut it in this crowd.

I saw some today. What is cool is that I have Comcast cable and can see some things that I haven't seen on TV. I love the on-demand feature. Also today I got to see the US woman who won the gold medal in Judo. Pretty sweet.
