Cedars-Sinai Denying Transplant to Medical Marijuana Patient with Inoperable Liver Cancer
Sixty-three year-old medical marijuana patient Norman B. Smith was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer in 2009 and sought treatment from the internationally lauded Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Smith's oncologist at Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Steven Miles, approved of his medical marijuana use as a means to deal with the effects of chemotherapy and pain from an unrelated back surgery. In September 2010, Smith became eligible for a liver transplant, but after testing positive for marijuana in February he was removed from the transplant list. Smith's cancer was in remission until just recently, but now he is scheduled to undergo radiation treatments in the next few days.

Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana Dodges Feds -- For Now

Last Wednesday, California's oldest storefront medical marijuana collective, Fairfax-based Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana

, received an eviction notice from its landlord -- which means the dispensary gets to defy the federal government's new war on medical marijuana

and remain open, for now.

Petition Drive Challenges Medical Marijuana Ban in Rural California County

Kern County is not exactly the kind of place where you would expect a voter rebellion, what with its conservative rural residents, its live-off-the-land values and its almost unshakable devotion to the Republican Party. But over the last several months, Kern County — about 100 miles north of Los Angeles and as far as it can get from San Francisco — has become the scene of a civil war of sorts over an issue, medical marijuana,

whose supporters are often of a more liberal stripe.

Urge Your Representative to Co-Sponsor HR 1983

Call your representative today, ask him or her to cosponsor HR1983, the States' Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act!

If passed, HR 1983 will essentially end federal interference in state sanctioned programs, provide patients and providers with a defense in federal court, and, most importantly, reclassify cannabis to Schedule III under the Controlled Substance Act. This reclassification will recognize the medicinal value of cannabis, open doors to critical medical research, and create access for people in need across the country!

Use ASA's Online Action Center to ask your Representative in the House to cosponsor this bill, today!
